Roof repairs, what it is and when you need it
A roof repair is targeted work on a roof that is otherwise sound: a cracked tile, a slipped slate, failed mortar on the ridge, a hole in the underlay felt, flashing that has lifted away from a wall. Done early and done properly, it is the cheapest roofing work there is.
It is the right answer when the covering still has years left in it and the problem is local. If the felt underneath has perished across the whole roof or battens are rotten, a patch repair only buys a season, and we will say so rather than take the money.
Most people call us because they can see a mark on a ceiling, a damp patch on a chimney breast, or tiles on the lawn after a windy night. By the time it shows inside, water has usually been getting in for a while.

Most leaks are not where the stain is. We inspect the roof properly, work out where water is actually getting in, and repair it so it stays fixed. You get photographs of what was wrong and what we did.
What happens if it gets left
Water that gets past the tiles does not sit still. It runs along battens and rafters, soaks insulation, and comes out somewhere that looks nothing like the hole it entered through. What starts as a single £150 tile can become rotten timber, ruined plasterboard and redecoration.
Damp loft timber also invites rot and mould, and wet insulation stops insulating, so you pay for it twice, once in the repair and once on the heating bill.
Leave it over a winter and repeated freeze-thaw widens every crack it finds. Cheap problems in September are expensive problems in March.

What we repair
Concrete and clay tiles, natural and fibre-cement slates, ridge and hip tiles, verges, valleys, flashings against walls and roof windows, and the underlay felt beneath the covering. Where tiles are discontinued we match profile and colour as closely as the market allows and tell you honestly how close the match will be.
Repointing and re-bedding is common on older Hampshire housing stock, where sand-and-cement mortar on ridges and verges cracks and drops out after twenty or thirty winters. Holes and tears in underlay felt are the other frequent culprit, the tiles look perfect and the water is running straight past them onto the felt below.
Repair or replace?
The test is whether the rest of the roof has life in it. If the felt is brittle everywhere you touch it, battens are soft, and tiles are delaminating across whole slopes, patching is throwing money at a roof that needs stripping. In that case we quote felt and batten replacement or a full roof replacement instead and explain why.
If the covering is sound and the fault is local, a repair is the sensible spend, and we will say that too, even when the bigger job would pay us more.
Storm damage and insurance work
After high winds the usual damage is lifted ridge tiles, slipped tiles along an exposed edge, and tiles pulled off around verges. We make the roof safe first and stop water getting in, then quote the permanent repair once the weather allows a proper look.
Photographic records of damage and completed work are provided where required, which is useful whether you are claiming or simply keeping a record for the property.

- How much does a roof repair cost?
- It depends entirely on what is wrong and how accessible it is: a single slipped tile and a failed valley are different jobs. We inspect free of charge and then give you one fixed price in writing.
- How long does a repair take?
- Most small repairs (tiles, slates, localised repointing) are done in a single visit. Larger patch work such as re-felting a section can take longer, and we tell you the expected duration with the quote.
- Will the repair be guaranteed?
- Guarantees on repair work vary depending on the job and the materials used, and we confirm yours in writing with the quote. The 20-year workmanship guarantee applies to full roof replacements.
- Are you insured?
- Yes, we carry £1 million public liability insurance, and we can confirm the details before work begins.
- Can you come out in an emergency?
- Normal working hours are 8am–5pm and we respond outside those hours wherever we can. For emergency call-outs we aim to be with you within 3 hours, depending on your location and our availability.
