Roof cleaning is the removal of moss, lichen and debris from the covering, with the gutters left clear afterwards and the waste taken away. On a Hampshire roof that has not been touched in years there can be a surprising weight of it.
It is maintenance rather than repair, but it is maintenance that prevents repairs, because most of what moss does to a roof is slow and invisible until something fails.
It is also the cheapest way to find out what condition your roof is actually in. With the growth off, cracked, slipped and porous tiles are obvious.

What happens if it gets left
Moss is a sponge. It keeps tiles permanently wet, and wet tiles freeze, expand and delaminate, which is how a roof ages ten years in three bad winters.
Clumps break off and end up in gutters and downpipes. Blocked gutters overflow down the wall, and water running down brickwork causes damp inside long before anyone looks up.
Growth also hides damage. Cracked or slipped tiles can sit unnoticed under moss for years while water quietly gets past them.

Why Hampshire roofs grow so much moss
Shade, damp air and tree cover are the three drivers, and plenty of local housing has all three. North-facing slopes that never see direct sun stay damp for most of the year, and overhanging trees drop the organic debris that moss roots into.
Older concrete tiles are particularly prone once their surface has weathered, because the rougher the tile, the easier it is for growth to hold on.
Method matters more than the machine
Aggressive pressure washing can look impressive and cause real harm: stripping the weathered surface from concrete tiles, forcing water under the covering and past the felt, and loosening ridge mortar. Careful removal protects the roof you are trying to preserve.
Access and safety are part of the job. Work is planned so that neither the roof nor anything below it takes damage while the growth comes off.
Cleaning and repair together
Almost every clean turns up something: a hairline crack, a slipped tile, a gap in ridge mortar. We are already up there, so dealing with it then is cheaper than a second visit later.
If cleaning reveals that the roof needs more than tidying (perished felt, widespread delamination) we say so plainly and quote the appropriate work rather than washing a roof that needs replacing.

- How often should a roof be cleaned?
- It depends on shade, trees and the age of the tiles. Shaded, tree-lined roofs need attention far more often than open south-facing ones. We will tell you honestly whether yours needs doing yet.
- Will cleaning damage my tiles?
- Not the way we do it. Careless high-pressure washing can strip tile surfaces and force water under the covering, which is exactly what we avoid.
- Do you clear the gutters too?
- Yes, gutters are left clear of the debris that comes off the roof, and all waste is removed from site.
- What if you find broken tiles?
- We show you and quote for replacing them while we are on site, so you are not paying for a second visit and access.
- How long does a roof clean take?
- Most domestic roofs are a single-visit job, with size, pitch, access and how much growth there is setting the exact time. You get a duration with the fixed price.
- Does a quote cost anything?
- No. Inspections and quotations are free and there is no call-out charge for a quotation, whether you go ahead with us or not.
- Are you insured?
- Yes, we carry £1 million public liability insurance, and we can confirm the details before work begins.
- How do I pay, and do you take a deposit?
- Bank transfer or cash. Some jobs need a deposit with the balance due on completion, and on larger projects we can arrange stage payments. It is all written down before anything starts.
